Latest-generation brake motors combine premium efficiency with fast stop and positive hold capabilities
* 'inverter-ready' motors with wide choice of power ratings: 1 to 30 HP (0.75 to 22 kW)
* washdown models available for use in clean environments such as food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing
March 10, 2005 --- Baldor has launched two new families of three-phase brake motors based on its renowned Super-E® premium efficiency motor technology. Intended primarily for applications involving lengthy duty cycles or continuous operation, where the need for energy conservation is most acute, the new Super-E brake motors feature an electro-mechanical spring-set brake which provides fast stop and positive hold capabilities. Available in standard and washdown versions, the motors are particularly cost-effective in applications involving 24/7 operation, such as conveyors and baggage handling systems.
Standard Super-E brake motors, known as 'EBM' models, offer a choice of 12 models spanning power outputs from 1 to 30 HP (0.75 to 22 kW) to maximise application flexibility. The complementary 'CEWDBM' family of washdown motors comprises 8 models, with power ratings from 0.5 to 5 HP (0.37 to 3.7 kW), which are built to the same exacting standards as Baldor's range of white epoxy-coated washdown duty motors.
All Baldor Super-E brake motors meet or exceed NEMA Premium™ and exceed equivalent IEC EFF 1 energy efficiency ratings. The 30 HP (22 kW) EBM model, for example, has a very high full load efficiency of 94.1%, and still provides a figure of 93.8% at half load. The motors employ a number of special design features to achieve this level of performance, including high copper mass windings, premium-grade steel laminations, precision rotor-to-stator air gaps, and high efficiency fans. As standard, the motors are designed for operation from 230/460 VAC, 60 Hz supplies and feature NEMA frame sizes, to suit OEMs and machine builders serving the US and similar markets. Metric versions with IEC standard frame sizes, designed for use with 50 Hz supplies, are also available for European and allied markets.
Both the EBM and CEWDBM families of Super-E brake motors are 'inverter ready', in that they meet the corona inception voltage requirements of NEMA Standard MG 1, Part 31.4.4.2, and can withstand peak voltages up to 1.6 kV. The motor windings use ISR® (inverter spike resistant) magnet wire, extra winding insulation and tightly bound end turns, which makes them up to 100 times more resistant to the type of transient voltage spikes and fast rise time pulses frequently produced by inverters, thus maximising reliability. The motors can also be used with adjustable speed drives, producing a constant torque output over a 20:1 speed range.
Baldor's Super-E brake motors are TEFC (totally enclosed fan-cooled) designs, and the CEWDBM washdown models are also TENV (totally enclosed non-ventilated). The largest 15 to 30 HP (11.2 to 22 kW) models in the EBM family have cast iron motor housings and fan covers, while all other models feature a thermally efficient steel band construction. The long-life spring-set brakes are mounted at the opposite end of the motor to the drive shaft, significantly simplifying installation; the motors have a NEMA standard 'BA' dimension, and can easily be converted to C- or B14-face mounting, using pre-tapped holes in the motor face.
The brake unit coils in all Super-E brake motors with power ratings up to 10HP (7.5kW) are internally connected to leads in the conduit box, enabling the brake to operate normally when power is applied to the motor. If separate brake coil connection is required for use with adjustable speed drives, the connections can easily be altered in the conduit box without disassembling the motor housing. The 15 through 30HP EBM motors are equipped with separate connections for the brake. All brake units on Super-E brake motors are fitted with 230/460V coils as standard, and feature a manual release mechanism to allow movement without the application of power.
Baldor's range of brake motors is already the most extensive in the industry. The introduction of the Super-E EBM and CEWDBM families means that users can now fit highly energy efficient versions, offering considerable savings in lifetime operating costs and reduced environmental impact. NEMA frame size, base mounting versions of all models are available ex-stock, with C-face mounting, metric IEC frame size and B14 face mounting versions available with very short delivery times.
All Baldor Super-E brake motors carry a comprehensive 3-year warranty.
